Chlorine, and why you can smell it

Chlorine is in your water on purpose. It is the disinfectant that keeps the supply safe between the treatment plant and your building, and removing it from the system would be a genuinely bad idea.

The catch is that a shower is the least forgiving place to meet it. Hot water releases chlorine as vapour, which is why the smell is stronger in the shower than at the kitchen tap — you are standing in a warm, enclosed room breathing it in. Chlorine is also an efficient degreaser, which is the entire point at the treatment plant and the entire problem on your skin, where the oils it strips are the ones doing the moisturising.

That tight, squeaky feeling after a hot shower is not cleanliness. It is your skin barrier, temporarily stripped.

Hard water: the minerals that stay behind

Hard water is water carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up from rock on the way to you. It is harmless to drink. It is less harmless to wash in.

Those minerals bind with soap and shampoo instead of rinsing away clean, leaving a fine residue on skin and hair.
